Typically software projects use some form of version numbering but the characters or the pattern might not seem very obvious from the beginning. It may be also important in the case of OpenVPN and the version numbering that you mentioned: version like “2. 6. 0-I004” may contain elements that could actually provide some information to the developers or users. Of course it seems difficult to know the meaning of every character in this version number for me.
